Over 30 years ago, the original Dawson Mill on the Bruce Peninsula suffered damage from a fire. The Dawson family came to Renfrew County to look for wood, and have been here ever since. Dawson Cedar was rebuilt at its current location in Eganville, and is now operated by the 2nd generation of the family, Paul, his wife LeeAnn and their son Scott.
Dawson Cedar specializes in cedar posts, which are used for fencing, guardrails, vineyards, and support for newly planted trees. The posts have many more uses, and are becoming increasingly popular for crop support in organic farming. Cedar's natural oils repel insect attacks and give the wood a long life without pressure treating. The posts are peeled and sharpened on site.
Almost all of Dawson Cedar comes from private, managed woodlots in Renfrew County. Recently, they have upgraded their woods operations with a mechanical processor and forwarder. The diversity of the business is what 3rd generation Scott Dawson likes about his job: "It's a lot of fun, hard work. I do something different every day".
Dawson's deals exclusively in eastern white cedar and, in addition to posts, have rough and dressed lumber for sale, as well as mulch by the truck or trailer load. They deal mostly in wholesale, but will sell in any quantity with a call ahead (613-732-0579) to make sure they have what you need. For more information, visit www.dawsoncedarproducts.ca.
