Herb Shaw & Son’s Limited is local wood producer with a long history in the forests of the Ottawa Valley. Currently managed by fifth generation members of the Shaw family, the business was established in 1847 and is believed to be Canada’s oldest, continually run family business.
They believe in responsible forest management and sell products bearing the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) logo. All wood that enters the mill yard comes from sustainably managed forests within a 160km radius. The company employs approximately 100 residents of Renfrew County and specializes in pine lumber and poles but also offers finished products including pine flooring, exterior siding, interior wall furnishing, mouldings and baseboards.
Finished products are available at 31 Sharon Street in Petawawa, with common finishes on hand and others on order.
The Ottawa Valley is known worldwide for its iconic white pine trees – Shaw’s would like to see partnerships between local builders and producers to feature products grown right here. Pine is a popular choice in cottage finishing and solid wood offers a natural, renewable product free from glues and preservatives.
You can buy products from Shaw’s by calling Steve McDonald in sales. They have a showroom set up adjacent to the mill displaying the different exterior and interior pine finishes available for sale. They are willing to work with customers to find the product that best fits their renovation or building needs.
