Don Burchat is a specialist in recreating furniture in the style of historic Polish Kashub craftsmen of the Ottawa Valley, referred to as “Wilno Furniture”. Although he crafts modern and classic pieces regularly, Don was inspired by his Kashub heritage and honed his craft learning from these methods and styles. There were three main furniture makers in Wilno during the late 1800s, each with a distinct “trademark incorporated by the craftsman, particularly evident in the fan pattern atop the cabinets”, says Don, who has spent much time doing research into the history and high-quality workmanship done by these early settlers of Wilno. Don received a Medal of Merit from the Senate of the Republic of Poland in 2008 for his promotion of Kashubian Culture in Canada.
After almost 25 years of custom woodworking, it is clear that Don takes great pride in his work and ensures that each piece meets the customer’s vision. He builds solid furniture that will last a lifetime and be passed on to future generations to cherish. In addition to paying tribute to traditional Wilno style, Don works with customers to craft furniture of all styles, shapes and sizes, from large items such as hutches and dining room tables to small pieces such as end tables, and even urns and jewellery boxes.
Most of the wood Don uses for crafting his furniture is harvested from his own woodlot in Wilno. It has been managed over the long term by earlier generations of his family and represents sustainable forestry at its best.
You can see numerous examples of his work on his website (www.wilnofurniture.ca), and he also has a showroom set up adjacent to his workshop for smaller pieces.
